This is a rare narrow endemic growing in the Golan Heights, Mt Hermon and S Lebanon. It was described only a few years ago and named after Naomi Feinbrun, one if Israel's greates botanists. This pic was taken in the eastern Golan Heights on a basaltic mountain ridge.

In Israel it is rather common and protected. at the base of the perianth lobes in the centre of the flower you can see tiny white hairs that are typical for this species.

This is the last colchicum to bloom in Israel. It is a desert species that blooms with leaves. Here you can see it in a barley field cultivated by the local Bedouins. The traditional management of such fields allow the colchicums to survive.

This is an old slide that I got scanned, sorry for the dust. Colchicum ritchii is one of the only colchicum penetrating the real desert. This pic was taken near the town of Beer-Sheva in loessial fields, where the bedouins are growing fodder barley. You can see the colour variation that is typical for this species. It is one of the late blooming species, blooming in January (wintertime).

This little known bulb grows in South Jordan and Saudi-Arabia. I found it blooming in sandy field edges above Little Petra in 1000 m. altitude. It was one of the only flowers around.

This is a nice small colchicum. It emerges only after the first heavy autumn rains. It is the commonest colchicum in Israel and occurs in the east Mediterranean to Turkey and Cyprus. At first the flower occur without leaves, quite soon during blooming the leaves appear.
