Colchicum variegatum is a striking autumn crocus that has tesellated flowers. It is an east Mediterranean species that blooms without leaves. We found it on the road gowing to Koprulu Canyon. As u probably saw, I posted some pics of this species in the past days. In this case I layed on the ground to get the light in flower.
Gloriosa superba is a tropical bulbous plant form Africa. Not many know that today it is classified together with Colchicum in the Colchidaceae family.
This striking, but modest bulb grows around Nieuwoutville with many other bulbous species. Surprisingly it belongs to the autumn crocus family - Colchicaceae.
