Bog myrtle (myrica gale) grows on this wet heathland at the edge of Matley Bog. The resinous scent from the plant's leaves is traditionally used as a natural insect repellent - perhaps the ponies like to graze amongst it because it helps to keep the flies away. The bog myrtle has nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their roots which help them to survive in the nitrogen-poor soil, as do the alder trees in the carr along the bog. The usually moist ground has dried out following a dry and hot period. The Beaulieu-Lyndhurst road can just be seen on the left of the photo. Date: 18 June 2006. Source: From
