Small deciduous tree. Leaves alternate, broadly lanceolate, very hairy when young, becoming glabrous on the upper surface with age. Flowers in large cream spikes, which turn hairy and brush-like when fruiting (left in the image)

It has wider leaves, larger flowers and flower veins and also denser hairy twigs than the bushveld beechwood. The tree's national number is 76.[3]
