Stem perennial, up to 6 m. high, densely covered with glandular-tipped reddish setae, also densely short-pilose, and with scattered prickles, which are 3-5 mm. long, strongly curved, flattened and pubescent at the base; leaves digitately 5-foliolate, or the upper 3-foliolate; stipules 5-8 mm. long, subulate or narrowly linear-lanceolate, attenuate; petioles 5-15 cm. long, densely short-pilose and copiously glandular-setose, with rather numerous prickles; terminal leaflet ovate, elliptic, oval, or obovate, acuminate at the apex, subcordate or rounded at the base, sharply and finely double-serrate, 5-10 cm. long, 3-5 cm. wide, sparingly pilose above, densely so beneath, more or less glandular-hispid and prickly on the midvein and the petiolule, which is 2-4 cm. long; lateral leaflets similar, but somewhat smaller, less subcordate at the base and with shorter petiolules; flowers in many-flowered panicles, which are terminal and also lateral in the upper leaf-axils; peduncles, branches, pedicels, and hypanthium densely 451
glandular-hispid and pilose; sepals ovate, abruptly subulate-acuminate, white-pilose and
glandular; petals white or pink, obovate, about 1 cm. long; fruit ovate, red or black when
ripe, about 10-12 mm. thick; drupelets numerous, small, ovate, glabrous; style persistent, terminal.
Type locality: In thickets of Jalapa, Vera Cruz. Distribution: In woods, from central Mexico to Costa Rica.
