The genetics of Rubus is extremely complex, so that it is difficult to decide on which groups should be recognized as species. There are many rare species with limited ranges such as this. Further study is suggested to clarify the taxonomy.[7]

荼蘼（读音：ㄊㄨˊ ㄇㄧˊ、tú mí），本作荼䕷[1]，又名酴醾、佛见笑，是蔷薇科悬钩子属多個種的中文俗稱，它們包括空心泡（或變種重瓣空心泡）、悬钩子蔷薇等。
荼蘼花枝梢茂密，花繁香浓，入秋后果色变红。宜作绿篱，也可孤植于草地边缘。果可生食或加工酿酒。根含鞣质，可提取栲胶。花是很好的蜜源，也可提炼香精油。
苏轼《酴醾花菩萨泉》诗：“酴醾不争春，寂寞开最晚。”宋代王淇的《春暮遊小園》詩：「一從梅粉褪殘粧，塗抹新紅上海棠，開到荼蘼花事了，絲絲天棘出莓牆」，「開到荼蘼花事了」意思是荼蘼花開時已屆初夏，春天已到盡頭，比喻某事已到尾聲[1]。
《红楼梦》中，众女掣花签，麝月拿到的那支正是荼蘼，象征了这个平凡不起眼，灵巧美丽不如晴雯，八面玲珑不如袭人的丫头却是能陪宝玉到最后的人。
佛典中也说它是天上开的花，白色而柔软，见此花者，恶自去除。
香港小说家亦舒著有小说《开到荼蘼》《花事了》；后影响到香港词作家林夕写了两首同名歌曲，均为歌手王菲演唱。
在植劇場系列當中的《植劇場－荼蘼》，以荼蘼花來命名，象徵著「花開到盛就會結束，但花季會再來」的重來寓意。
