The rusty-tailed flycatcher (Ficedula ruficauda) is a small passerine bird in the flycatcher family Muscicapidae. It is found mainly in the northern regions of the Indian Subcontinent and some parts of southwest India, as well as pockets of Central Asia including Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The species is partially migratory, with the Central Asian populations migrating to India, as far as the southwest Indian coast along the Arabian Sea, to Karnataka and Kerala.
Other populations, especially those across the lower Himalayas, remain in their native regions year-round and breed there. The species is also an occasional vagrant to other areas in India.
The rusty-tailed flycatcher is 14 cm (5.5 in) in length and weighs 11–16 g (0.39–0.56 oz). The sexes have similar plumage.[2]
In a molecular phylogenetic study of species in Muscicapa and related genera (tribe Muscicapini) published in 2016, Gary Voelker and colleagues found that the rusty-tailed flycatcher was basal to the other Muscicapini species and proposed that it be placed in its own monotypic genus Ripleyia.[3] This name was found to be preoccupied and was replaced by Ripleyornis.[4] A subsequent phylogenetic analysis that included species from both Ficedula and Muscicapa found that the rusty-tailed flycatcher formed part of a clade containing members of Ficedula.[5]

El papamoscas colirrojo mide 14 cm de largo y pesa entre 11-16 g. Ambos sexos tienen un plumaje similar.[3] Su cabeza y partes superiores son de color pardo grisáceo, salvo la cola y obispillo que son rojizos. Sus partes inferiores son blanquecinas.

Rödstjärtad flugsnappare är en medelstor (14 cm), upprätt sittande skogslevande flugsnappare med platt huvud och stora mörka ögon. Den är mestadels gråbrun med karaktärslöst ansikte men tydlig rostrött på stjärten och övre stjärttäckarna. Undre näbbhalvan är karakteristiskt blekt orangefärgad. Sången som vanligtvis levereras tidig morgon och sen eftermiddag från högt i ett träd är rätt ljudlig och melodiös.[4][5]
Fågeln förekommer från Uzbekistan, Tadzjikistan och östra Afghanistan till norra Indien och Nepal.[3] Vintertid flyttar den till sydvästra Indien, i södra Västra Ghats.[4] Tillfälligt har den påträffas i Kina[4] och Kazakstan[1] Den behandlas som monotypisk, det vill säga att den inte delas in i några underarter.
Fram tills nyligen placerades den istället i släktet Muscicapa och vissa gör det fortfarande.[6] DNA-studier visar dock att den är en del av Ficedula.[7]
Rödstjärtad flugsnappare häckar i öppna barr- och blandskogar på mellan 1200 och 3300 meters höjd. Dess föda är rätt okänd, men tros omfatta små ryggradslösa djur som flugor, skalbaggar och fjärilar. Den häckar mellan maj och juli. Arten är flyttfågel och lämnar häckningsområdet i augusti och september.[4]
Arten har ett stort utbredningsområde och en stor population med stabil utveckling och tros inte vara utsatt för något substantiellt hot.[1] Utifrån dessa kriterier kategoriserar internationella naturvårdsunionen IUCN arten som livskraftig (LC).[1]
Världspopulationen har inte uppskattats men den beskrivs som vanlig i nordvästra och norra Indien, lokalt vanlig i Pakistan och Nepal, sällsynt eller fåtalig i Uzbekistan och Tadzjikistan samt lokalt vanlig i sydvästra Indien vintertid.[8]
