體延長而側扁。眼大，大於兩眼間距。口大，下頜略突出；齒單列，稀疏而尖銳；鋤骨、腭骨及舌上亦具齒。鱗小，頰部、鰓蓋、體側皆被鱗；側線完全，幾呈直線。
背鰭兩個，分離，
第一背鰭具硬棘VIII-IX，第二背鰭硬棘I，軟條13-14；臀鰭基底略後於第二背鰭基底，硬棘III，軟條12-13；胸鰭短，不延伸至第二背鰭；尾鰭叉形。體藍黑至紫褐色，腹部較白。
棲地

主要棲息於較深的礁區，深度可達400公尺左右。主要以魚類及甲殼類為食。

Scombrops boops, the gnomefish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a gnomefish from the family Scombropidae. It is found in the Indo-West Pacific and marginally in the south eastern Atlantic. It occurs off South Africa and Mozambique and around Japan and in the South China Sea. It grows to a maximum total length of 150 centimetres (59 in) and a maximum published weight of 16.1 kilograms (35 lb). Adults inhabit deep rocky waters while the juveniles are found in shallower areas. It feeds on crustaceans, cephalopods and other fishes.[1]
