體延長而側扁。眼大,大於兩眼間距。口大,下頜略突出;齒單列,稀疏而尖銳;鋤骨、腭骨及舌上亦具齒。鱗小,頰部、鰓蓋、體側皆被鱗;側線完全,幾呈直線。
背鰭兩個,分離,
第一背鰭具硬棘VIII-IX,第二背鰭硬棘I,軟條13-14;臀鰭基底略後於第二背鰭基底,硬棘III,軟條12-13;胸鰭短,不延伸至第二背鰭;尾鰭叉形。體藍黑至紫褐色,腹部較白。
棲地

主要棲息於較深的礁區,深度可達400公尺左右。主要以魚類及甲殼類為食。

Scombrops boops, the gnomefish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a gnomefish from the family Scombropidae. It is found in the Indo-West Pacific and marginally in the south eastern Atlantic. It occurs off South Africa and Mozambique and around Japan and in the South China Sea. It grows to a maximum total length of 150 centimetres (59 in) and a maximum published weight of 16.1 kilograms (35 lb). Adults inhabit deep rocky waters while the juveniles are found in shallower areas. It feeds on crustaceans, cephalopods and other fishes.[1]
