體呈橢圓形而側扁,標準體長為體高之2.1-2.4倍。眼中大,上側位。口小,上頜骨末端僅及眼前緣。眶下骨裸出;前鰓蓋骨後緣平滑。頰部有鱗2列。體被櫛鱗;側線之有孔鱗片16-20個。鰓耙數22-23。背鰭單一,軟條部不延長而呈角形,硬棘XIII,軟條13-14;臀鰭硬棘II,軟條11-14;胸鰭鰭條17-19;尾鰭內叉形,上下葉末端呈角形。成魚體呈亮褐色,鰓蓋上具一橘黃斑,有時不顯;背鰭基底後緣具一黑斑;胸鰭黃色,餘鰭褐色。幼魚體偏黃,頭背部自吻端具一藍帶延伸至背鰭硬棘部基底後緣下方連接另一藍緣之黑斑,此斑紋隨著成長而逐漸消失。
