Greyish, median fins darker; 4 round, white-edged, black ocelli on posterior part of body; white-edged black band across peduncle; black blotch on lateral line behind tip of pectoral; faint dark spots on anterior part of body (Ref. 3200).

Found in coastal lagoons (Ref. 122778), in continental shelves (Ref. 122779). Associated with coral reefs. Bentivore (Ref. 101628). Larval peak occurrences found at transition area of an upwelling front, i.e. intermediate and deep water layers, where the near-ground upwelling layer is able to transport larvae back to the shelf (Ref. 122780).

Inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms.
