體延長,側扁。眼大且突起,吻短,吻長小於眼徑。口小,上頜末端未達眼前緣。頭小,標準體長為頭長的5倍以上。鰓蓋背緣未達身體中線。體披圓鱗,側線鱗數約50-52枚。第一鰓弓鰓耙數25枝。背鰭起點約在體中部,背鰭具9-11根軟條,腹鰭具11-12根軟條,臀鰭8-10根軟條。具脂鰭,脂鰭起點在臀鰭末端前方。體色為深褐色至黑色。

Melanolagus bericoides) es una especie de pez marino actinopterigio,[2] la única del género monoespecífico Melanolagus.[3] Su nombre viene del griego 'melanos (negro) + lagos (liebre, correr).[4]
Morfología
La longitud máxima descrita es de 20 cm.[5] La aleta anal es más larga que el pedúnculo caudal y las aletas pectorales pegadas a la superficie ventral del cuerpo; no tienen vejiga natatoria; cabeza y cuerpo de color negro cuando está fresco.[6]
Distribución y hábitat
Es un pez marino batipelágico de aguas profundas que vive entre 100 y 1.700 metros de profundidad,[7] Se distribuye de forma muy amplia por aguas del océano Pacífico, océano Índico y océano Atlántico.[2] Usualmente se le captura aislado, pero también en pequeñas agregaciones; se alimenta de plancton.[2]

Vissen Melanolagus bericoides is een straalvinnige vis uit de familie van kleinbekken (Bathylagidae) en behoort derhalve tot de orde van Spieringachtigen (Osmeriformes). De vis kan een lengte bereiken van 20 centimeter.
Leefomgeving
Melanolagus bericoides is een zoutwatervis. De vis prefereert een diepwaterklimaat en heeft zich verspreid over de drie belangrijkste oceanen van de wereld (Grote, Atlantische en Indische Oceaan). De diepteverspreiding is 730 tot 850 meter onder het wateroppervlak.
Relatie tot de mens
Melanolagus bericoides is voor de visserij van geen belang. In de hengelsport wordt er weinig op de vis gejaagd.
