Medium-sized to large deciduous tree. Bark greyish-brown, flaking, leaving pale patches. Leaves paripinnate with 4-6 pairs of (sub)opposite leaflets. Leaflets oblong-elliptic, 3-9 cm long, dark green above paler below, leathery; margin entire with a yellow rim. Flowers in small clusters, the single petal pinkish-red with yellow veining. Fruit a large flattened pod, thickly woody, 10-17 cm, splitting to reveal large, shiny black seeds with a bright red aril.

Die Peulmahonie (Afzelia quanzensis) is 'n bladwisselende boom met 'n platterige kroon wat voorkom in klein stande op klipperige of sanderige grond. Die boom groei in die noorde van KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga en Limpopo asook in Mosambiek, Zimbabwe, die noorde van Botswana en die Caprivistrook. Kenmerkend van die boom is die groot, swaar houtagtige peule. Die sade is groot en donkerbruin met 'n wasagtige, rooi arillus. Die blare is veervormig saamgestel met 'n hoë glans - donkergroen bo en dowwer onder.

Afzelia quanzensis (pod mahogany, Afrikaans: peulmahonie, Venda: mutokota, Zulu: inkehli) is a protected tree in South Africa.[1]

Description

This deciduous tree can grow up to 20m in height, and has smooth, grey bark, which can flake in irregular patches. It has glossy dark green leaves and blooms between October and November. The flowers have one large red petal. After flowering, it produces a seed capsule, a thick wood-like pod, which contains black seeds with a hard, bright red aril covering one end.[2]

Uses

The seeds are sometimes made into native necklaces and the timber is an ornamental and lumber hardwood, used in furniture, parquet flooring and railway sleepers.[2]

This plant may be used in traditional medicine.[3]

Descripción

Es un árbol de 1,5 a 35 m de altura, con tronco irregular, y 10-50 (-100) cm de diámetro.

Distribución y hábitat

Se encuentra en matorrales, bosques perennes o secos, bosques abiertos con Brachystegia en miombo, en la arena, con suelos relativamente secos, cerca de termiteros, bosques ribereños; también en torno a inselbergs, etc .. En Botsuana, Sudáfrica y en la Franja de Caprivi.

Ecología

Esta planta sirve de alimento a las larvas de mariposas Charaxes bohemani.

Taxonomía

Afzelia quanzensis fue descrita por Friedrich Welwitsch y publicado en Apontamentos Phytogeographicos 586. 1858.[1]
