Hexathele és un gènere d'aranyes migalomorfes, de la família dels hexatèlids (Hexathelidae). Viuen només a Nova Zelanda. La majoria de les espècies foren descrites primer per Raymond R. Forster.[1]
La majoria d'espècie de Hexathele són aranyes relativament grans. Les femelles de Hexathele waita, una de les més grans, pot tenir un carapace 13 mm (0,5 in) 15 mm (0,6 in) (0.5 dins) molt de temps i un abdomen 38 mm (1,5 in) (0.6 ) molt de temps, amb la cama més llarga (el quart) ser mm (1.5 ) molt de temps en total. Hexethele L'espècie és generalment marró a negre en color. Molta espècie té un patró de galó en la superfície superior de l'abdomen, la característica de ser del patró de l'espècie. El carapace del cephalothorax té una depressió més o menys recta (fòvea) en el centre. Els ulls són arranjats en un grup compacte. El palp mascle no té apòfisis tibials (projeccions), però el primer parell de l'home de les cames tenen dorsos dobles en la tíbia. Hi ha sis spinnerets, amb el ser de parell posterior tres-segmented i relativament molt de temps.[2]
El genus va ser aixecat per Anton Ausserer dins 1871, per l'espècie Hexathele hochstetteri. Mygalomorph Les aranyes eren inicialment molt en termes generals categorized; dins 1892, Eugène Simon va col·locar Hexathele en el grup Hexatheleae, subfamília Diplurinae, família Aviculariidae.[3] Més tard la subfamília va ser aixecada al familiar Dipluridae amb Hexathelinae com a subfamília – la classificació utilitzada per Raymond R. Forster Quan va descriure molta espècie nova.[2] La subfamília va ser partida fora com a família plena, Hexathelidae, per Robert J. Raven dins 1980.[4]

Hexathele is a genus of funnel-web spiders endemic to New Zealand that was first described by Anton Ausserer in 1871,[2] though most others have been described by Raymond Robert Forster.[1] Originally placed with the curtain web spiders, it was moved to the Hexathelidae in 1980.[3]
Most species of Hexathele are relatively large spiders. Females of Hexathele waita, one of the largest species, may have a carapace 13 mm (0.5 in) long and an abdomen 15 mm (0.6 in) long, with the longest leg (the fourth) being 38 mm (1.5 in) long in total. Hexethele species are generally brown to black in colour. Many species have a chevron pattern on the upper surface of the abdomen, the pattern being characteristic of the species. The carapace of the cephalothorax has a more or less straight depression (fovea) in the centre. The eyes are arranged in a compact group. The male palp lacks tibial apophyses (projections), but the male's first pair of legs have double spines on the tibia. There are six spinnerets, with the posterior pair being three-segmented and relatively long.[4]
The genus was erected by Anton Ausserer in 1871, for the species Hexathele hochstetteri. Mygalomorph spiders were initially very broadly categorized; in 1892, Eugène Simon placed Hexathele in the group Hexatheleae, subfamily Diplurinae, family Aviculariidae.[5] Later the subfamily was raised to the family Dipluridae with Hexathelinae as a subfamily – the classification used by Raymond R. Forster when he described many new species.[4] The subfamily was split off as a full family, Hexathelidae, by Robert J. Raven in 1980.[1]
