Description: Ray on seabed
K. Sulak says that the ray in the image is almost certainly Rajella fyllae. The pattern of spotting is characteristic, as are the multiple rows of small spines along the rather broad tail. The bands across the tail are sometimes visible in this species, sometimes not. R. fyllae is a boreal to low Arctic species, inhabiting both sides of the North Atlantic, 100-800 m depth, generally between 1-7 degrees C.
S. Iglésias agrees with this identification
J. McEachran also agrees with this identification Item Type: Image Title: Ray (Rajella fyllae) Copyright: Serpent Project Species: Rajella fyllae Behaviour: Resting on seafloor Site: Atlantic -- North Sea -- West of Shetland -- LagganNorth Sea -- West of Shetland -- Laggan Site Description: Seafloor Depth (m): 650 Latitude: 60 deg 56' 00" N Longitude: 2 deg 53' 00" W Countries: UK -- West of Shetland Habitat: Temperate Gravel and Sand Rig: Jack Bates Laggan Project Partners: Total, Transocean, Subsea 7 ROV: Clansman 2 Deposited By: Rob Curry Deposited On: 13 March 2007
