Onopordum acanthium (Cotton Thistle) is a species of biennial herb in the family Asteraceae. They are associated with freshwater habitat. They are native to Germany, Azerbaijan, Iran, Switzerland, Georgia, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Russia, Portugal, Italy, Yugoslavia, Spain, Tajikistan, Albania, Afghanistan, Romania, Ukraine, Greece, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Czech Republic, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, France, Armenia, Austria, Hungary, and Iraq. They have achenes. Flowers are visited by Small garden bumblebee, Ashton's Cuckoo Bumblebee, Vestal cuckoo bee, and Buff-tailed bumblebee.
