Holotype: UMMZ 123858 according to Golay et al., 1993, Endogly. Venom. Snakes World 478pp.[174].

Type-locality: Southern slopes of Volcán San Martín, 7 airline miles north of San Andrés Tuxtla, Veracruz, Mexico.

Two subspecies, M. l. limbatus Fraser, 1964, and M. l. spilosomus Pérez-Higareda and Smith, 1990, were recognized by Pérez-Higareda and Smith, 1991, Publ. Espec. Univ. Nac. Autón. México 7:1-122[74].
