Description

These snakes reach a maximum size of about 92 cm, the average size is between 45 to 65 cm. A black cap covers the upper part of the head, including the parietal and most of the first 5 subralabials. This cap is separated from the black nuchal band by a white band. The black body bands are about 3 to 5 dorsals long. The white bands are 1 to 2 dorsals long and the red bands are 4 to 7 dorsals long. The white and red bands have dark tipped scales. The bands are irregular and sometimes incomplete on the belly. The red ventral scales have large black smudges. (Roze, 1996)

There are 210 to 237 ventral scales and 31 to 46subcaudal scales Roze, 1996).
