Acanthopterus is a genus of weevil known only from New Caledonia*. It has not been revised taxonomically, but is currently considered to be a valid genus in the tribe EUGNOMINI. However, it probably belongs in fact to the unrelated tribe ATERPINI. Three species are currently included in the genus. Cited in their original combinations, these three species are: (1) Acanthopterus inermis Heller, 1916; Trachodes penicillatus Montrouzier, 1861 (imprint 1860)(type species); and Trachodes tristis Montrouzier, 1861 (imprint 1860), though the placement of the last mentioned species is uncertain.
* The genus has been somewhat misleadingly reported as being represented in the New Zealand section of the New Zealand Arthropod Collection (NZAC), but this record was based on New Caledonian material only.
