Perennial twining herbs. Leaves pinnately 3-foliolate; leaflets sometimes lobed. Stipules and stipels present. Flowers borne in 4-10-flowered axillary clusters, usually appearing before the leaves. Calyx 4-5-lobed, the upper pair united into a short rounded or notched lip. Corolla: standard oblate, reflexed; keel incurved through 360 degrees, the beak twisted. Style composed of two parts: a thickened, curved, glabrous upper part and a slender flexible lower part. Pods linear, straight. Seeds oblong, flattened.
