Aellopos ist eine Gattung der Schmetterlinge aus der Familie der Schwärmer (Sphingidae).

Merkmale

Die kleinen Falter haben eine braune Grundfarbe mit einer weißen Musterung unterschiedlicher Intensität auf den Flügeln. Frisch geschlüpfte Imagines haben eine fast schwarze Grundfarbe, mit einer leicht irisierenden grünen und rosafarbenen Schattierung. Ihr Körper ist gedrungen, bei den meisten Arten befindet sich ein auffälliges silbrig-weißes Band auf dem Rücken des vierten Hinterleibssegmentes. Die Fühler sind kurz und an ihrer Spitze hakenförmig gekrümmt. Die Arten der Gattung sind einander sehr ähnlich und können leicht verwechselt werden.[1]

Vorkommen und Lebensweise

Die Gattung ist vor allem im tropischen Amerika verbreitet. Drei Arten, Aellopos titan, Aellopos clavipes und Aellopos tantalus treten auch in den südlichsten Gebieten der Vereinigten Staaten auf, eine vierte Art, Aellopos fadus ist dort als regelmäßiger Irrgast bekannt.[1]

Le genre Aellopos regroupe des insectes lépidoptères de la famille des Sphingidae, de la sous-famille des Macroglossinae, de la tribu des Dilophonotini. Ces papillons sont diurnes.

Description

Ce sont de petits papillons de couleur de base brune avec des motifs blancs d'intensité variable sur les ailes. Nouvellement éclos, les imagos sont presque noirs, avec un ombrage vert et rose légèrement irisé. Le corps est trapu, la plupart des espèces ont une bande blanche argentée distincte à l'arrière du quatrième segment abdominal. Les antennes sont courtes et en forme de crochet incurvé à l'extrémité. Les espèces du genre sont très similaires et peuvent facilement être confondues[1].

Distribution

Les espèces de ce genre se rencontrent aux États-Unis, en Amérique centrale et en Amérique du Sud (en Argentine et en Uruguay).

Aellopos Hübner, 1819 è un genere di lepidotteri appartenente alla famiglia Sphingidae, diffuso in America Settentrionale, Centrale e Meridionale.

Descrizione

Le antenne sono di moderata lunghezza, clavate e uncinate alle estremità. Il capo è largo e i palpi labiali terminano repentinamente poco al di sopra del punto di inserzione della fronte.

La colorazione dominante dei rappresentanti di questo genere è il marrone più o meno scuro, con varianti giallo-fosche; in alcune specie l'addome presenta una banda bianco-argentata, più o meno ampia, sul quarto segmento. Le ali, esse pure di colorazione principalmente bruna, presentano in talune forme, disegni o campiture bianche o gialle, di geometria variabile.

Distribuzione e habitat

La distribuzione è esclusivamente neotropicale e neartica, a partire dagli Stati Uniti settentrionali (Maine, Michigan, New York), fino alla Terra del Fuoco.

Gli esemplari si rinvengono in zone boschive di ambienti principalmente tropicali o sub-tropicali. Le abitudini sono tipicamente diurne.

Alimentazione

I bruchi parassitano principalmente le foglie di varie specie di Rubiaceae.

Aellopos er en slekt av svermere.

Utseende

Middelsstore (vingespenn 40–65 millimeter), svært kraftige, mørkbrune svermere. Kroppen er kort og tykk, bakkroppen vanligvis med et hvitt tverrbelte og med en kraftig dusk av hår på bakkroppsspissen ("hale"). Vingene er påfallende små sammenlignet med kroppen, forvingen har ofte to uregelmessige, samle, hvite tverrbånd.

Levevis

Larvene lever på planter i maurefamilien (Rubiaceae). De voksne sommerfuglene flyr gjerne om dagen, men også i skumringen, og besøker blomster.

Utbredelse

Slekten er utbredt i Amerika, fra New York til sørspissen av Sør-Amerika.
