Robust, prickly perennial herb, up to 1 m. Stems annual, simple or branched in the upper part, covered in irregular spiny wings and glandular hairs. Leaves mainly in a basal rosette, linear-elliptic, green and rough above, covered in white felt below. The margins are coarsely serrulate-dentate with spines on the apices of the teeth and smaller spines in between. Capitula terminal, solitary on the stems and branches, ray-florets yellow; disk-florets darker orange-yellow. Involucral bracts spiny.
