They are native to US Minor Outlying Islands, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Caatinga, Cerrado, Eastern North America, Ceará, and The Contiguous United States. They have compound, broad leaves. Individuals can grow to 25 m. They have alternation of generations.
