Bonny Doon Manzanita

Arctostaphylos silvicola Jepson & Wiesl.

Evolutionary Distribution

provided by EOL authors
Evolution of the Arctostaphylos genus is relatively recent, with hybridization playing an important role; however, convergent evolution patterns appear to complicate cladistic constructions for certain portions of the genus cladogram. In any case, fossil ancestors of the Arctostaphylos genus have been suggested to have occurred in the Middle Miocene, with modern species beginning to take shape in the Late Tertiary. It has been further posited that in the earlier Tertiary a greater species diversity was present, influenced by influence of floristic influence of southwestern North America ancestors. This hypothesis also suggests that the present palette of California Arctostaphylos species became more depauperate upon arrival of a cooler drier climate in the Late Tertiary. These evolutionary views are coincident with other research that points to fire-dependent plant associations developing in the Late Miocene in California. Present species distribution of Arctostaphylos silvicola is restricted to approximately twenty occurrences in Santa Cruz County, California.

Arctostaphylos silvicola

provided by wikipedia EN

Arctostaphylos silvicola is a species of manzanita known by the common names Bonny Doon or silverleaf manzanita. It is endemic to the sandhills of the southern Santa Cruz Mountains in California's Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties.[2]

Description

This is a large shrub growing at least a meter tall and known to exceed six meters in height, looking much like a tree. The bark is dark red and smooth. The leaves are greenish gray in color and sometimes slightly woolly. They are oval in shape and up to 3.5 centimeters long. The shrub flowers in inflorescences of long, urn-shaped manzanita flowers and produces drupes 6 to 12 millimeters wide.

Habitat

Arctostaphylos silvicola grows in coniferous forest and chaparral on inland marine sands.[3]

Conservation Status

Silverleaf is listed as "fairly endangered" by the California Native Plant Society.[3] The main threats to the species are habitat loss through sand mining and development. A portion of the habitat is protected by the Bonny Doon Ecological Reserve.
