Pyxidanthera barbulata ist eine von zwei Arten aus der Pflanzengattung Pyxidanthera in der Familie der Diapensiaceae. Sie sind endemisch im Osten Nordamerikas.
Pyxidanthera barbulata ist ein immergrüner, kriechend wachsender Halbstrauch. Seine ungestielten Blätter sind ahlenförmig.[1]
Die ungestielten Einzelblüten entspringen kurzen, dicht belaubten Verzweigungen. Die Kronblätter sind mittels der breiten Staubfäden der Staubblätter verwachsen zu einer Röhre. Die Staubbeutel sind zweifächrig und öffnen sich quer, Pollen wird nur freigesetzt, wenn die Staubbeutelspitze herabgedrückt wird. Staminodien fehlen. Der Griffel ist ebenso lang wie die Kronröhre.[1]
Die Gattung wurden 1803 von André Michaux erstbeschrieben. Phylogenetisch bildet sie das Schwestertaxon zu einer Klade aus Berneuxia, Shortia und Diapensia.[1]

P. barbulata no es un musgo. Es un arbusto bajo que forma una estera en el suelo. Se desarrolla a partir de un rizoma y la raíz forma tallos a intervalos donde se encuentran con el suelo. Las hojas tienen forma de lanza y no superan un centímetro de largo. Las flores tienen color rosa los sépalos y los pétalos blancos de hasta aproximadamente 0,5 cm de largo.[4]
Esta planta crece en suelos secos, arenosos, bajo los pinos. A pesar de que puede aparecer en los humedales, se adapta bien a las condiciones secas. También se adapta a hábitat propensos a los incendios forestales.[2]
