They are native to Mata Atlântica, U.S. Virgin Islands, Rio Grande Do Norte, Pará, The Contiguous United States, Ceará, ParaíBa, North America, Cerrado, Mato Grosso Do Sul, Rio De Janeiro, Sergipe, Amazônia, Minas Gerais, Pantanal, Acre (Brazil), Puerto Rico, Tocantins, GoiáS, Mato Grosso, SãO Paulo, Paraná, Hawaii, Pernambuco, Eastern North America, Alagoas, and Bahia. They have compound, broad leaves. Individuals can grow to 13 m.
