Hau kuahiwi or Kauai hau kuahiwiMalvaceae (Mallow family)Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands (Kauai)IUCN: Critically Endangered Oahu (Cultivated)Hawaiian NameHau kuahiwi literally means "hau of the mountains" or "upland hau," referring to it's mountain habitat. Hau (Hibiscus tiliaceus) is a Polynesian introduced plant from in the lowlands.Hibiscadelphus is an endemic Hawaiian genus with 8 known species, 3 of which are extinct and the rest are critically endangered.EtymolomyThe generic name Hibiscadelphus is from the Greek hibiscum, marsh mallow, and delphi, brother, meaning "brother of Hibiscus," suggesting their close affiliation to the genus Hibiscus. The specific epithet distans is from the Latin disto or distare, distant, because of the geologically distant range of this species from those on the other islands of Maui and Hawaii Island, and due the fact that fruit morphology stands apart from others in the genus.
