Zehneria anomala is a perennial climber with young glabrous stems that soon become woody, a grey bark and simple tendrils. The leaves are glabrous, somewhat fleshy and deeply lobed into 3-5-lobes that are variable in shape. The flowers are monoecious; male flowers are yellowish and arranged in 2-6-flowered subsessile clusters, while female flowers are produced solitary. The fruit is subglobose, scarlet, with lenticular seeds.
