Description

Perennial climber with prostrate or scandent stems up to 3 m long. Tendrils 2-fid. Leaves compound, pedately 3-7-foliolate; leaflets ovate or elliptic, unlobed with a somewhat sandpapery surface and finely dentate margins; median leaflet largest, 3.5-11 cm long; lateral leflets smaller, asymmetric at the base. Flowers unisexual on different plants; petals unequal, lower 3 larger than upper 2, cream or yellow with an orange mark at the base. Male flowers c. 4 cm wide, in several to many-flowered axillary inflorescences; female flowers solitary, slightly smaller than male. Fruit fusiform, 4.5-6.5 cm long, beaked, with 8 longitudinal rows of tuberles, bright orange or red when ripe, splitting into 3 valves.
