Polygala chiapensis Blake, Contr. Gray Herb. 47: 40. 1916.
Stems erect, about 2.4 dm. high, pubescent with short incurved or incurved-spreading and sometimes a few longer incurved-spreading hairs; lowest leaves oval or obovate, reduced, the middle and upper lanceolate, 2-4.2 cm. long, 5-8 mm. wide, acuminate, cuneate at base, sparsely incurved-pubescent, reticulate; racemes 6-10 cm. long; pedicels 4 mm. long; flowers probably purplish; sepals ovate-oblong to ovate, acute, 2-2.3 mm. long; wings oval, 5.5 mm. long, 3.5 mm. wide, broadly rounded, subunguiculate at base, sparsely ciliolate, along costa incurved-pubescent; keel 5-6 mm. long; capsule oval, rather densely incurved-puberulous, 10 mm. long; seed silky-pilose; aril papery, 1.5 mm. high, with minute umbo, sparsely pilose, irregularly lobulate, not divided into distinct lobes, the horizontal dorsal margin 2.2 mm. long.
Type locality: Mountains in the temperate region, Chiapas. Distribution: Known only from the type locality.
