Perennial herb, up to 60 cm high, growing from a sub-spherical tuber, up to 35 cm in diameter. Stems up to 50 cm long, rarely longer, spreading horizontally, rarely erect, more or less densely velvety. Leaves opposite, mostly narrowly ovate-elliptic, ovate or obovate, 3-9 cm long, more or less densely velvety on both surfaces, sometimes dotted with reddish glands; petiole 2-10 mm long. Flowers in axillary, up to 15-flowered heads, more or less densely velvety. Corolla lobes spreading, oblong-ovate, c. 5 × 2 mm, mostly green, sometimes mauve, bluish or greenish-brown with mauve tips. Corona green to brownish or purplish-green; lobes simple, 4-8 mm long, with a deeply bifid apex. Fruit a single follicle, rarely paired, erect, narrowly ovoid, 5.5-11.5 cm long, tapering, finely velvety.
