Polygala tonsa Blake, Contr. Gray Herb. 47: 63. 1916
Fruticose, branched, sparsely and minutely incurved-puberulous; leaves ovate or ovatelanceolate, 7-10 cm. long, 2.1-3.5 cm. wide, acuminate, mucronulate, cuneate at base, chartaceous, not reticulate, sparsely and minutely appressed-puberulous, glabrate, ciliolate ; petioles incurved-puberulous, 3-4 mm. long; racemes extra-axillary, 2 cm. long; pedicels 5-6 mm. long; flowers greenish ; sepals oval, sparsely glandular-ciliolate, on back subglabrous but glandularpunctate, 2.5-3.5 mm. long; wings orbicular, rounded at apex, short-clawed, greenish, glabrous, 7.5 mm. long and wide; keel 6.5 mm. long; capsule quadrate-oval, emarginate, short-stipitate, glabrous, 6.5 mm. long, 5.8 mm. wide; seed (with aril removed) ellipsoid, pilose, 3 mm. thick; aril fleshy-coriaceous, vaulted, 2 mm. high, grooved toward base, more or less pilose on sides.
Type locality: La Vega, Dept. Santa Rosa, Guatemala. Distribution: Known only from the type locality.
