Zanthoxylum jamaicense P. Wilson & Torreya A glabrous tree, 5-10 m. high, with a prickty trunk, the branches unarmed or with few, slender, brownish prickles 3-6 mm. long; leaves odd-pinnate, 13-24 cm. long, the leaflets 3-9, oblong to oval, occasionally somewhat obovate, 2.8-11 cm. long, 1.5-4.8 cm. broad, sessile or short-petioluled, more or less crenulate, obtusely acuminate or rarely rounded at the apex, equilateral or inequilateral and cuneate at the base, dull or somewhat lustrous above, paler beneath, the venation more prominent than above ; terminal leaflet usually longpetioluled, the petiolules often articulate at the summit; inflorescence terminal, paniculatecorymbose; staminate flowers ( immature): sepals 3, semioval to broadly triangular ; petals 3, ovate; stamens 3; pistillate flowers : sepals 3, broad^triangular ; petals 3, ovate, 2-2.2 mm. long, 1-1.2 mm. broad; gynoecium 3-carpellary ; ovaries sessile; follicles (immature) 2, accompanied by one abortive carpel, or solitary and accompanied by two abortive carpels, subglobose, 4 mm. in diameter, brown, apiculate, the surface pitted.
Type locality: Dolphin Head Mountain, Jamaica. Distribution : Known only from the type locality.
