Perennial herb with 1-3 annual stems, growing from a slender vertical tuberous rootstock. Leaves opposite, shortly petiolate, lanceolate, up to 11 × 3.5 cm, pubescent on both surfaces; apex pointed, rounded or truncate at the base; margin with minute rough hairs. Inflorescences terminal and extra-axillary, 6-18-flowered spherical umbels. Corolla campanulate, reddish-purple, occasionally yellow, hairless or minutely papillate inside, pubescent outside. Lobes up to 12 × 8 mm, ovate-oblong to obovate, pointed and recurved at the apex. Corona lobes reddish-brown, flattened, spreading at the base, ascending to erect above, up to 13 × 4.5 mm, spathulate to obtriangular. Follicle erect on a twisted pedicel, up to 12 × 3 cm, lanceolate-fusiform with 6 longitudinal wings.
