Description of Leptospironympha

provided by BioPedia
Species vary in size (53-250 µm) with a rostrum relatively longer than Macrospironympha. The 2 flagellar bands are underlain by parabasal fibres and parabasal bodies. During division each centriole follows each hemi-rostrum and continuing flagellar band for a short distance, but the nucleus does not migrate posteriorly. Sexuality present. Three species occur in Cryptocercus punctulatus, e.g. L. wachula (Cleveland, 1951b); 6 other species have been described in the termite Stolotermes from Australia (Cleveland and Day, 1958). Partial EM study in Hollande and Carruette-Valentin (1971). Type species: Leptospironympha eupora Cleveland, Sanders, Hall & Collier, 1934.
