身體延長，體型較其他科別大(角鮟鱇科及鞭冠鮟鱇科除外)，略為側扁；頭部佔身體比例小，約35%SL以下；吻觸手位於鼻端稍後部位；不具餌球。吻觸手長143-158
%SL；不具任何分支。最長尾鰭鰭條為36-45
%SL；背鰭鰭條3-4；臀鰭鰭條4；胸鰭鰭條18；下頜不具齒，變態後雌魚齒骨退化；較小的魚體通常會有上頜牙齒；口腔上部具有乳突狀或魚卵狀腺體，稱之為口腔腺(oral
gland)；皮膚接近裸露或有微細棘覆蓋。
棲地

主要棲息於光線微弱或無光線之深海區；幼魚為漂浮性，生活在食物豐富的海洋上層水域；變態期後的魚種則生活在遠洋深海中層或深層水域。

Rhynchactis leptonema[1] es un pez que pertenece a la familia Gigantactinidae.[2] Habita en los océanos tropicales y subtropicales donde se encuentra a una profundidad de unos 400 metros (1300 pies). Esta especie crece hasta una longitud de 12,6 centímetros (5,0 pulgadas) TL.
Fue reconocida por primera vez en 1925, por el inglés Charles Tate Regan.[3]
