Annual, glabrous, deep green, the stem simple, or usually branched at the base, the branches loosely corymbose above, 0.5-3 dm. tall, relatively slender; leaves few, mostly opposite, the blades obovate to oblong or linear-oblong, 0.4-1.3 cm. long, obtuse, very minutely toothed, sessile ; bracts similar to the leaves but smaller and more manifestly toothed ; outer sepals ovate-lanceolate, about 3 mm. long at maturity, acute, sparingl_v glandular-toothed ; inner sepals quite similar to the outer, but slightly broader and with more glandular teeth and rather acuminate ; petals white ; staminodia subulate ; styles distinct ; capsules ovoid or globose-ovoid, about 2 mm. long.
Type locality : Northern Europe.
Distribution : Nova Scotia. Naturalized from Europe.
