Lentigo lentiginosus, common name the silver conch, is a species of medium-sized sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Strombidae, the true conchs.[1]
The maximum shell length of this species is 100 mm, but more commonly it grows up to 75 mm.[2]
As is the case in many strombids, the adult shell of Lentigo lentiginosus is very heavy and thick, with a characteristic deep stromboid notch, and a flared, very thick and posteriorly expanded outer lip. The columella is anteriorly projected, and the siphonal canal is convex. The body whorl has a notably irregular surface, which is ornamented by spiral cords and rows of blunt tubercles that form elevated knobs on the shoulder.[2] The inner lip is smooth, with a large callus that often spreads over the spire and over the body whorl. The shell has a tall spire, and each whorl of the spire has a row of heavy knobs and groves that nearly completely fold over each other.[2] The shell color is usually white with large irregular brown blotches and dots occurring at intervals over the shell surface. The columellar callus has a characteristic faint silvery gloss.[2] The lateral margin of the outer lips has a series of tan blotches. The aperture is pink to orange on the interior, becoming paler towards the margins.[2]

Lentigo lentiginosus is widespread in the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa, including Aldabra, Madagascar, Mauritius and Tanzania to eastern Polynesia, and also in southern Japan and northern Australia.[2][1]
The silver conch lives on coral and sandy bottoms in clear water. It is commonly found on barrier or lagoon reefs, in intertidal and shallow subtidal zones to a depth of around 4 m.[2] It is rarely seen buried in the sand.[3]
Like the other species that used to be included in the genus Strombus, L. lentiginosus is known to be a herbivore.
The flesh of Lentigo lentiginosus is edible, and it is locally collected for food. The shell is used in shellcraft, and is commonly sold in local markets around the central Philippines.[2]

C'est un gros coquillage (7-11 cm), à la coquille spiralée et épaisse. L'intérieur est crème ou jaune pâle, le bord de la coquille présentant des bandes alternées brunes et blanches. L'extérieur de la coquille est recouvert d'épibiontes dans la nature, mais une fois nettoyée des motifs bruns apparaissent sur un fond clair. Les yeux sont gros et pédonculés, et sortent facilement inspecter les environs quand l'animal est manipulé[1].

Les bandes sombres sur la lèvre de la coquille sont caractéristiques de cette espèce, mais se retrouvent chez certains autres strombes comme Euprotomus bulla.
C'est une espèce récifale, inféodée aux récifs de corail de l'Indo-Pacifique tropical, où elle vit principalement dans les premiers mètres de profondeur[2].
On la retrouve de la côte est-africaine à la Polynésie, en passant par les Maldives, les Mascareignes, et toute la région indonésienne[1].
Ce coquillage figure sur une émission de Wallis et Futuna de 1984 (valeur faciale : 22 f) sous la description : Strombus lentiginosus.

Concha de coloração creme a branca, com manchas cinzentas a marrons, sólida e extremamente nodulosa, principalmente em sua última volta; com a sua espiral pouco alta e visivelmente estriada[4] e com a sua última volta formando uma aba pouco destacada, dotada de lábio externo engrossado e atravessado por faixas marrons, com o seu interior de um creme rosado[5][6] ou alaranjado.[2] Chega de 7.5[2] a até 10.5 centímetros em suas maiores dimensões.[7]

Lentigo lentiginosus ocorre no Indo-Pacífico tropical[2] e Pacífico ocidental,[7] habitando areias provenientes de restos dos recifes de coral, em águas rasas[2] até os 12 metros de profundidade,[3] principalmente nas costas do leste da África, incluindo Madagáscar (ausente no Mar Vermelho e Golfo Pérsico),[8] até o arquipélago da Sociedade, na Polinésia Francesa;[6] passando pelas Filipinas[9] e não sendo comum na Ásia, exceto pelo sul da Índia, península Malaia[6] e Japão.[8] Também é encontrado em Guam,[9] no norte e nordeste da Austrália, na Grande Barreira de Coral, na Nova Guiné[3] e Nova Caledónia.[8]
O animal desta espécie é utilizado para alimentação, não sendo espécie rara nos mercados locais da região central das Filipinas.[8]
