Thalassocyon tui, n. sp. Figs 1, 2

Protoconch eroded, remainder of shell with 4 whorls, rapidly expanding. Spire whorls strongly keeled above the lower suture; on the penultimate the keel lies about the middle of the whorl; on the body whorl the keel is high. Keel drawn out into narrowly triangular plates, 16 on the body whorl, 11 on the penultimate. Growth lines well marked, running from tip of keel plate across the shoulder of each whorl, and to the lower suture on the spire whorls; from the keel to the tip of the canal on the body whorl. Whole of shell sculptured with fine, raised, spiral-cords drawn out on to each plate of the keel and usually not continuous across the growth lines, about 22 above the keel on the penultimate, and 18 below the keel, 22 on the shoulder of the body whorl, some 80 across the rest of the body whorl and base, closer spaced towards extremity of keel plates and across base. Aperture pyriform, drawn out into an elongate, open canal, strongly angled by the keel. Columella straight.

Height: 37.8 mm., diameter (between extremities of keel plates) 25.3 mm.

Holotype (M. 21299) in Dominion Museum.

Locality: AUZ 98, near 30°11.5;S, 179°52’W, taken in an Isaacs Kidd mid water trawl fished for five hours between 525 and 550 fathoms over 659 to 630 fathoms. Bottom sample in trawl presumably taken form a pinnacle, 26 July 1962.

The new species agrees in general with T. bonus Barnard but has more numerous keel plates, which are drawn upwards towards the apex to a greater extent.”
