Rock Violet

Viola lithion N. H. Holmgren & P. Holmgren

Distribution

provided by EOL authors
This rare and endemic species from Nevada was thought to occur in Utah based on a single specimen collected on July 6, 1929 by Dr. Walter Cottam (#4535). Investigation of Dr. Cottam's field book, a field trip to the area in August of 2005, the elevation and habitat requirements of the species, and based on comments made by Holmgren (1992) and his botanical expeditions in the area all lead to the conclusion that the collection on the west side of Pilot Mtn in the Pilot Range by Cottam was actually in Nevada even though Dr. Cottam's hike that day started in Utah's Box Elder Co. near the edge of the Utah-Nevada border. Based on the best available current information, it would appear that this species only occurs in Nevada.
