Opuntia demissa Griffiths is apparently a hybrid between O. oricola and an unknown taxon (B. D. Parfitt and M. A. Baker 1993), likely to be O. littoralis. The hybrid appears to be rather widespread and blurs distinctions between the putative parents.

Trees or shrubs, spreading, 2-3 m; trunk, when present, to 30 cm. Stem segments not disarticulating, dark green, flattened, subcircular to broadly obovate, 16-25 × 16-19 cm, nearly smooth, glabrous; areoles 8-10 per diagonal across midstem segment, prominent, subcircular, 4.5-5.5 mm, greatly enlarging to 10 mm diam.; wool tan to gray. Spines 5-13 per areole, in most areoles, usually reflexed, translucent yellow, aging red-brown, angular, curved, subulate, the longest 20-25(-50) mm. Glochids in rather dense crescent along adaxial margins, increasing in length toward base, subapical tuft poorly developed, tan, aging brown, to 6 mm. Flowers: inner tepals yellow throughout, 25-40 mm; filaments yellow to orange-yellow; anthers yellow; style red; stigma lobes green or light green. Fruits red to red-purple, pale yellow inside, with seed pulp red, subspheric to barrel-shaped, 37-60 × 30-45 mm, juicy, glabrous, spineless; areoles 23-63. Seeds gray-brown, subcircular to semicircular, 3.5-4 mm diam.; girdle protruding to 0.4 mm. 2n = 33 (an abnormal, polyhaploid individual), 66.

Opuntia oricola ist eine Pflanzenart in der Gattung der Opuntien (Opuntia) aus der Familie der Kakteengewächse (Cactaceae). Das Artepitheton oricola bedeutet ‚Vorkommen in den Bergen'.[1]

Beschreibung

Opuntia oricola wächst strauchig bis baumförmig und erreicht Wuchshöhen von 1 bis 3 Meter. Die elliptischen bis kreisrunden Triebabschnitte sind 15 bis 25 Zentimeter lang und 12 bis 19 Zentimeter breit. Die 4,5 bis 6 Millimeter im Durchmesser messenden Areolen stehen 1,2 bis 2 Zentimeter voneinander entfernt. Die vier bis 16 gelben und durchscheinenden Dornen vergrauen im Alter oder werden schwarz. Sie sind gebogen und etwas verdreht, nicht aufgeraut und 2 bis 4 Zentimeter lang.

Die gelben Blüten erreichen Durchmesser von 5 bis 6 Zentimeter. Die fast kugelförmigen, fleischigen, roten Früchte werden 2,5 bis 4 Zentimeter lang und erreichen ebensolche Durchmesser.

Verbreitung, Systematik und Gefährdung

Opuntia oricola ist in den Vereinigten Staaten im Süden des Bundesstaats Kalifornien sowie im mexikanischen Bundesstaat Baja California bis in Höhenlagen von 500 Metern verbreitet.

Die Erstbeschreibung durch Ralph N. Philbrick wurde 1964 veröffentlicht.[2]

In der Roten Liste gefährdeter Arten der IUCN wird die Art als „Least Concern (LC)“, d. h. als nicht gefährdet geführt. Die Entwicklung der Populationen wird als stabil angesehen.[3]

Description

Opuntia oricola is a large treelike cactus often exceeding 2 meters in height. The branches are made up of rounded flat segments up to 25 centimeters long. It is covered in clusters of curved, yellowish spines usually around 2 centimeters long.

The flowers are yellow, sometimes orange-tinged. The spherical fruit is purplish red on the outside, whitish and juicy inside, and up to 6 centimeters long. It was common along the coasts and adjacent inland areas of California, but development has reduced its populations.[2]

Descripción

Opuntia oricola es un arbusto que crece en forma de árbol y alcanza un tamaño de 1 a 3 metros de altura. Los cladodios son elípticos a circulares de 15 a 25 cm de largo y de 12 a 19 cm de ancho. Las areolas tienen 4,5 a 6 milímetros de diámetro y de 4 a 16 espinas amarillas y translúcidas que con la edad cambian a grisáceo o negro. Están dobladas y ligeramente retorcidas, no son rugosas y miden de 2 a 4 cm de largo. Las flores amarillas que alcanzan 5 a 6 centímetros de diámetro. Los frutos casi esféricos, son carnosos, rojos y de 2,5 a 4 cm de largo y puede alcanzar el mismo diámetro.

Taxonomía

La especie fue formalmente descripta en 1812 por el botánico Ralph N. Philbrick y publicado en Cactus and Succulent Journal 36(6): 163–165f. s.n. (p. 164). 1964.[1]

Etimología

Opuntia: nombre genérico que proviene del griego usado por Plinio el Viejo para una planta que creció alrededor de la ciudad de Opus en Grecia.[2]

oricola: epíteto que deriva del griego ori = "monte", y -cola = "amar o habitar", lo que "vive en las montañas", pero David Hollombe sugiere que podría ser del latín ora que significa "borde o costa", en lugar del griego oreos = "montaña", lo cual parece lógico ya que es una especie costera (.[3]
