Philadelphus stramineus Rydb. sp. nov
A straggling shrub about 2 m. high, with ascending branches ; bark of the young twigs brown and more or less short-villous, of the previous season's growth chestnut and exfoliating, and of the old stems straw-colored ; buds hidden in the bases of the petioles ; petioles very short, 1 mm. long or less ; leaf-blades oblong, lance-oblong or oval, acutish at both ends or obtuse at the apex, entire-margined, leathery, grayish-green and strigose on both sides ; flowering branches 1.5-3 cm. long, with 2 or 3 pairs of leaves and 1-3 flowers ; hypanthium and the short pedicels strigose ; sepals ovate, acuminate, about 6 mm. long, densely strigose without, tomenttdose within ; petals oval, about 1 cm. long, rounded at the apex ; stamens 30-40 ; styles united ; stigmas distinct, or united below ; capsule broadly obovoid, about 8 mm. long.
Type collected in the White Mountains, Mono County, California, in 1888, by W. H. Shockley. Distribution : Known only from the type locality.
