Dominant Flora of the Aruba-Curaçao-Bonaire Cactus Scrub
provided by EOL authors
Being only about twelve degrees north of the equator in latitude, this habitat is quite arid, exhibiting high evapotranspiration rates. Underlying soils are derived from limestone and quartz formations. Most of the natural areas on the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire are sparsely vegetated with cactus scrub. Columnar cacti are common, and can grow up to six meters in height. Along with Pilosocereus lanuginosus, the dominant cacti species are: Stenocereus griseus and Cereus repandus. These species, as well as P. lanuginosus, flower and fruit profusely during the dry season, and provide critical resources for a variety of bats, birds and other animals. Also characteristic of the ecoregion is the wind-swept divi divi tree (Caesalpinia coriaria, a non-cactus scrub species in the fabaceae family).
