Strawberry guavaMyrtaceae (Myrtle family)Native to Brazil and adjacent tropical South AmericaA highly invasive species in the Hawaiian Islands. In Hawaii, the red-fruited variety is locally known as waiaw ulaula. The yellow-fruited variety is usually larger and is known as lemon guava (Psidium cattleianum f. lucidum) or waiaw melemele.Picked fresh from a hike. Among the locals, there appears to be either a love, a love/hate, or a hate affiliation with strawberry guava in Hawaii. Any way you view them, they are a serious invasive species in the islands replacing huge tracts of native forests producing a monoculture environment.
