Urtica dioica is a species of perennial herb in the family Urticaceae. They have a self-supporting growth form. They are native to Canada, Alaska, Western North America, United States, The Contiguous United States, and Saint-Pierre Et Miquelon. They have simple, broad leaves and achenes. Flowers are visited by Vanessa atalanta, Sceliphron destillatorium, and Limenitis lorquini. Individuals can grow to 0.96 m.
