Description of Liceida

provided by BioPedia
The majority of species have spores brightly coloured to dingy olivaceous in mass. Fruiting bodies are structurally simple, lacking characters found in other orders; no columella, no calcium carbonate, and no true capillitium associated with the mature fruiting body. Capillitial threads are present in two monotypic genera, Kelleromyxa and Listerella. The so-called pseudocapillitium found in some taxa in this group needs to be evaluated on the basis of ultrastructural and developmental studies. This order represents a heterogeneous assemblage of probably unrelated taxa. Modern methods of DNA analysis are needed to evaluate the phylogenetic relationships of members of this order.
