Shrub or small tree, 2-6 m. tall, glabrous throughout, or sparsely puberulent on the young leaves and inflorescence; leaves firmly membranaceous to subcoriaceous, ovate-lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, 2.5-6 cm. long, 0.6-2 cm. broad, acutely acuminate to obtusish, broadly acute to obtusish at the base, the petioles 2-3 mm. long; inflorescence simple or dichotomous, umbellate, bearing several to numerous, small, greenish-white flowers; pedicels 2-4 mm. long; calyx-lobes broadly ovate, acute, 1-1.5 mm. long; corolla salverform, glabrous externally, the tube 3-4 mm. long, about 0.75 mm. in diameter at the base, somewhat inflated at the insertion of the stamens, sharply constricted at the orifice, the lobes obliquely ovate, 1.5-2 mm. long, virtually erect; drupes opalescent, oblong-ovoid, the seeds, including the stony layer of the endocarp, 9-10 mm. long.
Type locality: Mexico.
Distribution: I^wer California to Vera Cruz and Oaxaca; also in Pacific coastal South America.

Vallesia glabra

Vallesia glabra, the pearlberry, is a species of plant, a shrub of the family Apocynaceae. It is native to tropical America. It also has the common names smooth vallesia[1] and tear shrub.[2]

Characteristics

This plant is a source of shelter, food and liquid for numerous birds, which rest under its shade and feed on its fruits that are similar to small, white grapes or pearls, hence giving the plant its English common name of pearlberry.

Growth

The shrubs can reach a height of between 2 and 6 metres (6 feet 6 inches and 19 feet 8 inches).

Distribution

This species is found in Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador (including the Galapagos Islands), Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, the Bahamas, Cuba and the United States (it is a native plant in Florida and has been introduced in California).
