體側扁而高，略呈三角形；背部輪廓隆起，體高略大於體長之一半。頭背部顱骨裸露，具輻射狀骨質突起。口小，吻突出，唇厚具細髭。前頜骨稍能活動，上頜骨一部份被眶前骨所覆蓋；頜齒數行，圓錐形；鋤骨無齒。鰓蓋骨無棘；鰓耙短小，結節狀。體被小櫛鱗；側線完全。背鰭高大，帆狀，硬棘IV，第III棘最強大，約略等長背鰭前緣長，軟條25-27；臀鰭硬棘III，第II棘較強大，約略等長臀鰭前緣長，軟條8-10；腹鰭起點在胸鰭基部後緣之下方；尾鰭淺凹形。體呈黑褐色，體側具數條不顯之暗色橫帶；各鰭色淡。幼魚背鰭、腹鰭及臀鰭之鰭膜則具有橢圓形黑斑。

It is an inhabitant of rocky reefs in deeper waters of 40 to 421 m (131 to 1,381 ft) in depth. This species grows to a length of 42 cm (17 in), though most are only around 20 cm (7.9 in). It is a commercially important species, and is the only known member of its genus.[2]
