Emperor

Body color is olive gray or tan, often with scattered irregular black blotches. The head is brown or olive with an indistinct reddish band on the snout. The base of the pectoral fin, the upper edge of the operculum and sometimes the posterior edge of the preoperculum are red.

Solitary or in groups (Ref. 90102). Thought to occur on soft bottoms near reefs and presumed to feed on benthic invertebrates and fish. Marketed fresh.

分布於印度-西太平洋區，包括查歌斯群島、泰國、印尼、菲律賓、日本及薩摩亞。台灣分布於東部、東沙島及南沙海域。

一般以圍網、刺網、定置網、拖網和船釣等方式捕獲，高經濟價值的常用食用魚，全年都可以捕撈到。

體延長而呈長橢圓形。吻中短而略鈍，吻上緣與上頜間的角度為50°-60°。眼間隔平坦或略凹入。眼大，位於近於頭背側。口端位；兩頜具犬齒及絨毛狀齒，後方側齒呈犬齒狀；上頜骨上緣平滑。頰部無鱗；胸鰭基部內側不具鱗；側線鱗數46-48；側線上鱗列數4.5；側線下鱗列數15-16。背鰭單一，不具深刻，具硬棘X，軟條9，第III棘最長；臀鰭硬棘III，軟條8，第1軟條通常最長，但等於或短於軟條部之基底長；胸鰭軟條13；尾鰭分叉，兩葉先端尖型。體呈灰褐至黃褐色，散佈許多不顯之不規則斑駁；胸鰭基底、鰓蓋後緣或前鰓蓋後緣、眼下方及唇部紅色。各鰭淡色或橘色。

主要棲息於岩礁及砂地交匯的海域。群居性，主要以軟體動物、甲殼類及小魚為食。
