Nearly all black, but a thin white line over the back from the tip of the snout and along the tips of the dorsal fin spines (Ref. 48635).Description: Characterized by vertebrae 13+15-17; tubed lateral line scales 7-11; sensory pores on dentary 4; without papillae present on head; depth of body at origin of dorsal fin 4.0-4.4 in SL (Ref. 90102).

Eggs are guarded by the male parent (Ref. 205).

Found in shallow wave-washed seaward reefs. Also in sheltered rubble reef slopes to at least 20 m depth (Ref. 48635).

分布於西-中太平洋區，包括日本南部、台灣、菲律賓及馬歇爾群島等。台灣分布於南部及綠島海域。

小型魚類，不具食用價值。

體延長，側扁。頭中大。吻短；唇厚。眼中大。口端位，斜裂；上頜骨向後達眼中央下方；下頜連合處具感覺孔。頭、背鰭、臀鰭、胸鰭、腹鰭皆無鱗，腹部全具鱗；後方鱗片末端不延長，具櫛棘，僅具有側線1條，沿背緣延伸至背鰭基底中部前。背鰭單一，硬棘部鰭膜間具缺刻，具硬棘XIX-XXI，軟條3-5；臀鰭具硬棘VIII-X，軟條3-5；胸鰭圓形；腹鰭延長；尾鰭圓形。體一致為黑褐色，背、臀，腹及尾鰭具橘黃色緣；胸鰭基上有小白點。

主要棲息於沿岸拂浪區內之潮池及礁岩。穴居性，且魚體小型，行動極為隱密，不易觀察其生活習性。肉食性，以無脊椎動物為食。
