Description: Characterized by male having orange red color on head and anterior body, pinkish color posteriorly with pink-edged orange band from snout to base of pectoral fin, upper back with a pair of small white spots; female having pink color grading to white ventrally, snout and upper head orange, four equally spaced white spots below dorsal fin; greatest depth of body 2.4-3.0 in SL; fleshy protuberance at front of upper lip absent in male; without prolonged dorsal spines; lunate caudal fin with filamentous tips in male; filamentous tips of pelvic fin (Ref. 90102).

A deep water species, forming small aggregations with large coral heads at the base of deep slopes in current prone areas. Usually in depths of 40+ m depth (Ref. 48635). Often in silty conditions, in 30-70 m (Ref 90102).
